Messages isn't the only Google product getting a boost from T-Mobile. Rich Communication Services, or RCS, is Google's answer to Apple's iMessage, but not every Android user has access to it. ![]() End-to-end encryption over RCS is currently only available through the Messages app, not other RCS-compatible software. The company says the beta rollout of the feature will continue throughout 2021. Google also shared an update on its work to add support for end-to-end encryption in Messages. Sometimes referred to as SMS 2.0, RCS works inside the Android Messages and Samsung Messages apps that are also the default SMS apps on Android phones. ![]() According to the carrier, it will complete this latest switchover by the end of the year. Its not clear how the partnership will affect the Cross-Carrier Messaging Initiative T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon (Engadgets parent company) announced in 2019. That meant T-Mobile subscribers could take advantage of all the protocol's headline features - including typing indicators and read receipts - when messaging people outside of the US. carriers that include Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile have already started adopting RCS support for Android devices. By mid-way last year, it also became one of the first carriers to implement a full standards-based interconnect with Messages. The fact that it took until 01/19 for Fi to have RCS is 'compelling' though, if you ask me, Sprint and TMobile (on a couple of phones) and even Verizon was beating-them-to-it, which is embarrassing, when Google controls both the hw/carrier side (on Fi).
